Spring 1978, me and (ie) 12/15 others, incl a General and family were left Charleston AFB for Frankfurt via C-141 passenger modified. We refueled in Dover, while there, tech reps equipment came aboard, we were drop off in Goose Bay, then head over pond. We were in air for hours and had to emergency land at Ft Mcquire AFB, no fire, no foam trucks or anything, but something was wrong with plane. We had to spend night. We re board next morning, was in air for hours again, and were told we had to sit plane down again because of problems, this time at Loring AFB. We spent night again. The Techs have now lost mission. The AFB personnel, military/civilian are very nice to us, Army personnel, offered to keep the pay office open and pay us if we needed money, food was great, treated very well ! We thought they had the "41" fixed, we re board the next morning, finally land in Labrador CN, was there for about 45 minutes, the we head over the pond. Finally we are over Germany. It's announced there are more problems with the aircraft. The flight will not be able to land at Rein Main, will have to divert and land at Ramstein AFB. I had to spend the night, get up and hitch a ride in the back of a truck to get to Bad Kreuznach. I had been in a C141 From Ft Hood to George (Victorville) with vehicles, on my way to Irwin and it had been a perfect flight, my experience, as far as the performance of the aircraft and flight had been great before I went to Germany. So, we never really knew what was wrong with the plane. It's kind of odd, most of the Army people traveled via civilian flights in that time era, so it's also odd that they simply didn't put us on a civilian plan after the initial emergency landing at Ft Mcquire. Anyone out there that could give (and educated) guess as to what was up with this ? Just still curious, after all these years. Thanks, Jack
