1. | Stephen Nipper (17-06-2009 10:11:40) It is a beautiful bird in this picture, but today it is on a GSAAuction.gov website for sale, with no engines, and the inside stripped. How fast they change. |
2. | Bill Kledas (16-12-2010 04:53:13) What a tragic end to a wonderful lady. She & I have been a lot of places together. I can tell you this for sure, she was lucky enough to have been flown by some of the very best "drivers" around and I was very fortunate to have served under them. |
3. | Casey Call (18-12-2010 01:36:38) I was the chief pilot for this Herk at Moffett Field from 1983 to 1995 and flew it to many corners of the globe. It was a "B" model with an "E" wing and dash 15 engines. It could really scoot at FL350!

As Ed Lewis used to say, flying it was the most fun you can have with your clothes on. But it was not just the machine, the fun and the friends, this airplane made significant contributions to both basic scientific knowledge and to remote sensing technology. Seems like it should be on a pedestal instead of the rubbish heap... |
